Checkered Kitchen with a Past

Project 6382 – Brookfield, IL

Older homes often have closets in the kitchen that masquerade as pantries.  These pantries take up a lot of space and can make for an awkward kitchen layout.  Such was the problem in this kitchen.  Originally, where the refrigerator now sits, the pantry ran down to the doorway on the right and divided the room into three cramped “hallways.”  By removing the wall down the center, the kitchen was suddenly light and airy.  Adding a peninsula in the middle of the room accommodates guests and kids with homework.  This small kitchen even had room for an intimate dining area under the stairs; a nice nook for morning coffee or a late night romantic tea for two.
